The elementary curriculum builds on the academic and
social foundational skills established in the primary program. The classroom
is a carefully prepared environment, designed to facilitate abstract
learning for students in first through eighth grade. The curriculum
endeavors to meet or exceed grade level requirements pursuant to the State
of Connecticut.
In addition, each student is encouraged to pursue areas of independent work
and study.
Students continue to experience the advantage of working together in a multi
age environment. The teacher guides the child’s intellectual growth by the
continued use of the Montessori didactic materials which are available to
the students for their use. The curriculum is based on four key areas –
language, math, cultural studies and the arts.
The language area develops reading skills
and reading comprehension strategies. The curriculum includes literature
discussion groups, vocabulary development and the study of grammar and spelling.
Writing skills are developed through the teaching and use of the writing
process. All areas of writing are addressed including; expository, creative,
persuasive, research, and poetry. The study of Spanish and Latin are an
important part of the language program.
The study of math focuses on building a
strong foundation in the processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division. Students study fractions, decimals, squaring, cubing, the order of
operations, the powers of numbers, positive and negative integers and are
introduced to the study of algebra. Word problems are an integral part of the
math program. Didactic materials continue to be used in the teaching of
mathematical concepts. This promotes a deep understanding of each idea so that
students are well prepared to think and reason. Geometry is included in the math
area. Each student learns to identify shapes and angles and is introduced to the
calculation of perimeter, area and volume.
In the area of cultural studies, the
disciplines of science, geography and history are presented. The study of
science includes the study of our earth, air, water, the development of life and
an introduction to botany, biology, chemistry, physics and zoology. The
geography curriculum includes an in depth study of each continent, its
countries, regions, physical geography, language, culture, economy, government
and history. The area of history includes a broad study of the history of man on
earth with a focus on each major human civilization. American history is a
particular area of study.
Areas of special study include instruction
in keyboarding, word processing and power point. The creative arts are both
integrated into the student’s classroom work as well as offered by specialized
teachers. Instruction includes exposure to the principles of drawing, painting,
sculpture, clay work, the study of artists, theatre and drama. Physical
education is done in 5-6 week segments and includes off site programming such as
swimming, gymnastics and Aikido.
The Academy also offers a music program which includes singing,
the use of instruments as well as reading and writing music.
